2006-2007 College Football – Week 14 December 2, 2006

An abbreviated post on my picks this week:

Georgia Tech, USC, Arkansas, Rutgers and Oklahoma will be winners today

2006-2007 College Football – Week 13 November 24, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

We are coming down to the wire in the College Football season.

This week should be the week which determines who will play Ohio State in the National Championship. If USC beats Notre Dame, and wins next week against UCLA; they’re in. They lose, they’re out, and it’s anybody’s guess who will be in; probably Michigan or Florida (if they win out).

Arkansas, Texas, and Boston College were all upset Friday. Arkansas lost to LSU, Texas lost to Texas A & M, and BC lost to Miami. Miami then proceeded to fire Larry Coker after a 6-6 season.

Games I’m picking this week:

#4 Florida at Florida State
Virginia at #17 Virginia Tech
South Carolina at #24 Clemson
#13 Oklahoma at Oklahoma State
#8 Louisville at Pittsburgh
#16 Georgia Tech at Georgia
#6 Notre Dame at #3 USC

My Picks:

Florida State, VT, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisville, Georgia, and USC

Upset Alert: Florida – in a rivalry game anything goes, and I’m picking the Seminoles. In case you can’t tell, I don’t care for Florida or Urban Meyer. I think they are the most overrated team in college football, and Meyer is the most overrated coach in college football.

2006-2007 College Football – Week 12 November 17, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

After last week’s BCS Shake-Up, this week brings up two pivotal games.  Those two games are Michigan at Ohio State, and Cal at USC.  Both games have major national title implications.  The Michigan/OSU game comes a day after Bo Schembechler, the Michigan/College Football coaching legend, passes away.  See the ESPN story here.

Games I’m pickin’:

#21 Maryland at #20 Boston College
Illinois at Northwestern
#5 Arkansas at Mississippi State
Army at #6 Notre Dame
#2 Michigan at #1 Ohio State
#15 Auburn at Alabama
#19 Virginia Tech at #14 Wake Forest
#17 California at #4 USC

My Picks:

Maryland, Illinois, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Michigan, Auburn, Virginia Tech, and USC.

Upset Alert: USC – Cal will be gunning for USC, but now that Cal’s title hopes are toast; USC will pull this one out.  I’d like to pick Miss. St. in an upset, but they are pretty bad.  I think Arkansas is ripe for an upset after beating Tennessee and having to play LSU next week.  This week is a definite trap game, but I don’t think Miss. St. has enough to pull it off.

2006-2007 College Football – Week 11 November 9, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

Week 11 looks to be a very good weekend for college football.  The most interesting game could be the one played tonight.  That game features #3 Louisville at #15 Rutgers.

Here are the games I’m picking:

#3 Louisville at #15 Rutgers
#16 Wisconsin at Iowa
Purdue at Illinois
#1 Ohio State at Northwestern
#2 Michigan at Indiana
South Carolina at #6 Florida
#8 California at Arizona
Miami (FL) at #23 Maryland
Nebraska at #24 Texas A&M
#9 Notre Dame at Air Force
#13 Tennessee at #11 Arkansas
Texas Tech at #17 Oklahoma
Alabama at #12 LSU
#4 Texas at Kansas State
#18 Wake Forest at Florida State
#21 Oregon at #7 USC

My Picks:

Rutgers, Wisconsin, Illinois, OSU, Michigan, Florida, California, Miami (FL), Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Arkansas, Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, Florida State, and USC.

Upset Alert: Louisville – Rutgers is playing excellent bal, and I think they get it done at home.

Games I’m Picking this week:

#11 Notre Dame at Navy
Illinois at #17 Wisconsin
#19 Oklahoma at #23 Missouri
Georgia at #9 Florida
Miami (FL) at #21 Georgia Tech
#8 Tennessee at South Carolina

My Picks:

Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Missouri, Florida, Miami (FL), and South Carolina

Upset Alert #1: Florida – Georgia has an outstanding defense, but they don’t score a lot either so it’s a push. With this game in Gainesville, I’ll still give the edge to the Gators but I wouldn’t count out the Dogs.

Upset Alert #2: Tennessee – Spurrier has owned Tennesse in his career. This game is in SC, and the Gamecocks play outstanding defense. This should be a great game, especially with the way Tennessee lights it up. This game will match strength (SC Defense) vs strength (TN Offense). I’ll take defense in this battle.

Not an exciting week in college football, but a few intriguing games….hence the 2 upset alerts. There are a few games where there are good 2 loss teams (see the Miami/Georgia/SC games) playing ranked 1 or 2 loss teams. The Notre Dame/Navy game is a good game if you’re a die hard/traditional college football fan.

2006-2007 College Football – Week 8 October 21, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

Games I’m picking this week:

#5 Texas at #17 Nebraska
Illinois at Penn State
#21 Wisconsin at Purdue
UCLA at #10 Notre Dame
Iowa at #2 Michigan
Alabama at #7 Tennessee
Washington at #11 California
#13 Georgia Tech at #12 Clemson

My picks:

Nebraska, Penn State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee, California, Georgia Tech

Upset Alert: Michigan – this a typical let down game for Big Blue. They cannot be looking ahead to OSU or Iowa will pull off an upset. Also, Iowa is coming off a terrible loss to Indiana, and should be fired up.

2006-2007 College Football – Week 7 October 14, 2006

Sorry, I missed the early games. Still crazy busy.

Games I’m picking this week:

#1 Ohio State at Michigan State
Ohio at Illinois
#2 Florida at #11 Auburn
#4 Michigan at Penn State

My Picks:

OSU, Illinois, Auburn, and Michigan

2006-2007 College Football – Week 6 October 5, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

A much better week of games this time around.  The past two weeks have been pretty boring, other than a BIG win for the ILLINI!!!

Here’s what I’m picking this week:

Indiana at Illinois
Washington at #3 USC
#9 LSU at #5 Florida
#7 Texas at #14 Oklahoma
Michigan State at #6 Michigan
#13 Tennessee at #10 Georgia
#11 Oregon at #16 California

My Picks:

Illinois, USC, LSU, Texas, Michigan State, Tennessee, and California

Upset Alert: USC – Look out Trojans.  You haven’t been dominating teams as in years past, and if you have a sluggish game, you’re going down.  However, I’m still picking the Trojans, because they have a superior defense which will give them the victory.

Other News: Auburn Coach Tommy Tuberville is calling for a playoff system, and for good reason.  Read this article to see what he has to say.   Basically, he hitsthis thing right on the head.  The powers that be (University Presidents) basically said they couldn’t extend the season to add a playoff system, but yet they can add additional bowl games.  It’s gotten to the point where it’s all about money and not about finding out who the best team in the Nation really is.  Seriously, teams can be .500 and get to a bowl game, but yet a 13-0 team can’t get a shot at a National Title (As Tuberville’s Auburn team found out in 2004).  Also, the article mentions that there are 5 SEC teams ranked in the top 13 right now.  Do you think Tuberville knows he’s going to lose at least one game?

Week 5 isn’t much better than week 4, still a lot of crappy games. However, next week looks promising with several great games lined up.

For this week, here are the games I’m picking:

Illinois at Michigan State
#24 Georgia Tech at #11 Virginia Tech
#1 Ohio State at #13 Iowa
#3 USC at Washington State
#14 Oregon at Arizona State

My Picks:

Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Iowa, USC, and Oregon

Upset Alert: Ohio State – Iowa is tough a home, OSU struggled last week, this will shake up the polls.

Also, Auburn, a sexy pick for the National Title, looked crappy tonight against South Carolina. This season could be the single most difficult to decide who the best team in the country is. I don’t think we’ll really know until the last week of the season.

Week 4 is a let down week after all of the excellent matchups last week. The good news…Big Ten play starts this week.

Here’s what I’m picking:

Wisconsin at #6 Michigan
#14 Iowa at Illinois
#24 Penn State at #1 Ohio State
#22 Arizona State at #21 California
#12 Notre Dame at Michigan State

My Picks:

Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, California, and Notre Dame

Upset Alert: Michigan – They’re coming off a dominating performance against Notre Dame (in South Bend), and they face a familiar foe in Wisconsin. Michigan, as of late, has been known to slip up in games they should win and this is that type of game. This will also be the first Big Ten game for either team, and if Michigan is sluggish, look out. If they play like last week, they’ll be fine.

2006-2007 College Football – Week 3 September 14, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

In week 3, things start to heat up in college ball. We start to see some conference games which always stir the pot up pretty good. I’m picking a crap load of games this week since 14 of the top 25 teams play AGAINST each other this week. That has to be some kind of record or something.

Games I’m picking this week:

Syracuse at Illinois
Iowa State at #16 Iowa
#11 Michigan at #2 Notre Dame
#6 LSU at #3 Auburn
#17 Miami (FL) at #12 Louisville
#15 Oklahoma at #18 Oregon
#24 Texas Tech at #20 TCU
Clemson at #9 Florida State
#19 Nebraska at #4 USC
#7 Florida at #13 Tennessee

My Picks:

Illinois, Iowa, Notre Dame, LSU, Miami (FL), Oregon, Texas Tech, Clemson, USC, and Florida

Upset Alert: Florida State (see my pick above) – they’ve been weak on offense all year and Clemson always plays them tough. I also think they’re one of the most overrated teams in the country. Iowa was my second choice, because Drew Tate is hurting and Iowa State has surprised them in the past.

As much as I would love to see USC lose, they’ll have too much speed on the field in the Colisseum and they’ll blow the Nebraska boys away. Notre Dame will light Michigan up in South Bend. LSU knocks off Auburn in a game that could have national title implications. Oregon knocks down the overrated Sooners. Clemson pulls an upset in Tallahassee. Florida smokes Tennessee at Rocky Top.

2006-2007 College Football – Week 2 September 8, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

This week’s marquee matchup is #1 Ohio State vs #2 Texas in Austin, Texas.  This is a rematch of last years great game which eventually led the Longhorns to the title game.   Last year, Texas won in Columbus and I think OSU pays them back this year.

Other than the Texas/OSU game, the week 2 schedule is pretty boring.  But here’s my games/picks.

Week 2 games:

Illinois at Rutgers
#19 Penn State at #4 Notre Dame
Minnesota at #22 California
#12 Georgia at South Carolina
#1 Ohio State at #2 Texas

My picks:

Illinois, Notre Dame, Minnesota, South Carolina, and Ohio State.

2006-2007 College Football – Week 1 August 31, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

It’s finally here…College Football. The first games of the season are played tonight, with probably one of the most emotional games of the year being played tonight between Northwestern and Miami(OH); the alma-mater of the recently passed Randy Walker (he was the Northwestern Coach at the time he passed).

College football is rapidly becoming my favorite sports season. I’ll be using these weekly college posts as a place to make my predictions, thoughts, and other various comments about the great game of college football.

I’ll try and highlight the biggest games each week as well as cover our local conference, the Big Ten, and of course talk about our beloved Orange and Blue.

Here’s a link to the College Football schedule on ESPN’s website.

Week 1 (Game = My pick)

EIU at Illinois = Illinois
#9 Cal at #23 Tennessee = Cal
#2 Notre Dame at Georgia Tech = Notre Dame
#11 Florida State at #12 Miami (FL) = Miami (FL)

Nothing too exciting the first week of the season. I probably wouldn’t have put the Notre Dame game on my list of picks, but everyone seems to think this game could be close because of the upset Tech gave to Auburn in week 1 last year. My guess, Quinn and the Irish carve em’ up by about 20+ on their way to a rout. Illinois better win this game or else we have serious problems; even though EIU is pretty solid they should never lose to a 1-AA team. Cal will pound the Vols. I just think the west coast teams always have the faster athletes that can just flat out get after it. Plus, Tennessee has been pretty stagnant the past few years.

The most exciting game this week is FSU and Miami, which isn’t played until Monday the 4th (Labor Day). Even though Hurricane Ernesto is disrupting the Miami practice schedule, I’m still picking the Canes. They lost a close one last year (by 3 pts) and their offense will be much better this year against a FSU defense that lost a few key guys to the pros. I think FSU makes some turnovers and Miami makes them pay.

Also, check out my season predictions here. I’ve predicted the number of games Illinois wins, the big ten champ, most overrated conference/team, and the national champ already.

Please post your picks, argue with mine, point out other games of interest, or talk about any other college football stuff that’s on your mind.

2006-2007 College Football: Season Predictions August 30, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

Here are my August predictions for this season of college football, so I can LAUGH at them in January.

Illinois Wins = 5 – EIU, Rutgers, Syracuse, Indiana, and Ohio.

Big Ten Champ = Iowa – the Hawkeyes beat the Buckeyes in a Saturday night showdown in Iowa City.

Heisman = Brady Quinn – so much hype, a great schedule, plenty of TV time, and his team will win enough games. He’s a lock. Only Troy Smith of Ohio State and Adrian Peterson of Oklahoma (if he stays healthy) will give him a run.

Most Overrated Team = West Virginia – they play nobody all year, but yet already have a #5 ranking to start the year. Which is why I have them listed as a potential National Champ possibility below. However, they are clearly the most overrated team to start the season. A USC, ND, Auburn, Miami, or OSU team would POUND them. Maybe I’d have more respect if they actually played somebody.

Most Overrated Conference = Pac-10 – all sorts of “experts” claim this is the best conference. ARE YOU KIDDING? Outside of USC and Cal, this conference is a joke. None of the teams in the conference know how to play defense and the Big 10, SEC (the best conference), Big 12, and ACC are better from top to bottom.

National Championship Possibilities: ND/USC/Cal vs Miami/Auburn/W.V.

National Championship Pick = Notre Dame vs Miami, with Notre Dame winning it all.

I’m picking ND. I know, I know, let me jump on the bandwagon too. Actually, they only have 4 tough games (PSU, Mich., MSU, and USC). I think they win all 4 of those games, with MSU and USC being revenge wins this year. All the other teams I listed above aren’t as experienced at the key positions as ND, or their schedules are tougher and that’s the reason for my pick.

What are your predictions?

Eastern Illinois University is coming to Champaign-Urbana this Saturday 9-2 to face off against the Fighting Illini.

Ron Zook’s squad is looking to get off to a good start this year with a win over EIU.

I figure Illinois is good for 5 wins this year.  Maybe 6 if we can pull an upset along the way.

Post your thougts, comments, predictions about the 2006 Illini.

Illini Football – Preseason Thoughts August 8, 2006

Posted by j-dub in College Football, Sports.

I must confess that I frequent the ESPN website almost daily. I subscribe to their magazine, and I just recently activated my ESPN insider account. I was poking around the insider pages and I found an excellent article about our beloved Fighting Illini football team.

That got me to thinking…college football is less than a month away! The Illini start their season on September 2nd against Eastern Illinois. Click here to see the 2006 season schedule.

Back to the article. I printed it to a pdf for your viewing pleasure. Click here to read all eleven pages of it. So as long as you don’t tell ESPN I’m letting you read it, then I’ll continue to post Insider stuff here that I find interesting. Basically, ESPN teamed up with this scouting company Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook to provide this report.

I must say that it is an amazingly thorough report and was a great read. I think what I found most interesting was the remarks about Zook’s recruiting as well as all the position changes that happened on the team. Zook moved a LB to FB and they jumbled the offensive line all over the place. Evidently all these changes are for the better, getting guys where their talent is going to be more beneficial.

The Blue Ribbon guys say 4-5 wins and

“Zook’s team will take a step toward respectability”.

I like the sound of that. I think that is right where I would expect Zook to be after the project he inherited.

What are your predictions/expectations for the Illini this year?
